01

Calculate walls and ceilings separately

Different sheet orientation and thickness may apply.

Wall area for a rectangular room is 2 × (length + width) × height. Ceiling area is length × width. Subtract major openings only after deciding whether offcuts can be reused.

02

Divide by actual sheet coverage

A 4 × 8 sheet covers 32 ft² before cuts.

Other lengths can reduce butt joints or waste when handling and access allow. Round upward and keep wall and ceiling products separate when the assembly requires different board.

03

Plan seams before choosing waste

Framing layout, openings, stairs, and transport affect yield.

A drawing of stud or joist direction exposes unsupported edges and narrow strips. Manufacturer literature and local requirements control fastening, joints, wet-area products, and rated assemblies.

04

Stop for rated assemblies and suspect materials

Quantity is not a demolition or structural plan.

Do not disturb suspected asbestos or lead-containing finishes without appropriate assessment. Fire-rated, shaft, garage, structural, and moisture-sensitive assemblies require exact listed details and may need permitted professional work.
