What the number means
MERV runs 1 to 20, and higher captures more.
EPA describes the MERV scale for residential filters as running from 1 through 20, where a higher rating captures more particles as air passes through. The number is about capture efficiency across particle sizes. By itself it says nothing about how much resistance the filter adds to your particular blower.
What each band is actually for
The bands map to different purposes, not to quality tiers.
| MERV | What it is for |
|---|---|
| 1–4 | Flat panel filters common in furnaces and air conditioners, mainly protecting the equipment rather than the air |
| 5–13 | Medium efficiency, reasonably effective on small to large airborne particles |
| 14–16 | Higher efficiency, similar in appearance to true HEPA |
| 17–20 | True HEPA values |
A MERV 1 to 4 panel is doing the job it was designed for. It simply was not designed for indoor air quality.
What EPA recommends, and the caveat inside it
Aim high, but only as high as the system tolerates.
EPA recommends selecting a furnace or HVAC filter rated at least MERV 13, or as high as the system will accommodate, and notes that you may need an HVAC professional to determine the highest efficiency filter that will work with your system. That caveat is the whole decision: a filter the blower cannot pull air through reduces airflow, which can hurt both comfort and equipment.
Fit and direction matter more than people expect
Air bypassing a filter is not filtered at all.
Match the size printed on the frame exactly; a filter that rattles in an oversized slot lets air pass around it. Install it with the arrow pointing toward the blower, in the direction of airflow. Close the access panel properly, because a gap there is another bypass path.
Change intervals are observed, not memorised
Look at the filter instead of trusting a calendar.
Manufacturers publish an interval, but conditions change it: pets, nearby construction, wildfire smoke, and a system running constantly all shorten it. Hold the filter up to a light after a month. If it is visibly loaded, that is your interval. A filter left in past the point of loading restricts airflow regardless of its rating.
