Read the thermostat state before changing it

Record mode, target, measured temperature, schedule, and displayed alerts.

Photograph the screen and note whether the system says cooling, heating, recovery, hold, auxiliary heat, or delay. A schedule override or utility event may explain behavior that looks like a hardware fault.

Compare with a separate thermometer

A nearby reference can expose location or sensor bias.

Place a reliable thermometer near the thermostat, away from sun, supply air, kitchens, doors, and electronics. Allow time to stabilize. A consistent difference points to placement, calibration guidance, or sensor problems.

Check whether the problem follows weather or one room

Pattern is more useful than one reading.

Record indoor and outdoor temperature, time, run time, and affected rooms. A whole-home problem only during design extremes differs from one closed register, a blocked return, or strong solar gain in one zone.

Escalate persistent mismatch safely

Do not jump thermostat terminals or open HVAC panels.

After documented settings, filter, registers, and sensor comparison, continued failure needs qualified HVAC service. Share the recorded pattern; it is more diagnostic than repeatedly changing the set point.
