Inventory before forecasting

Use the operating system’s storage breakdown, then separate replaceable applications from unique personal data. Record current size and expected device lifespan.

Make every file-size assumption editable

Camera, codec, quality, and app behavior vary widely.

Plan photos with an average MB value and video with bitrate and minutes. Treat presets as examples, never fixed truths for every device.

Keep headroom and copies visible

Free working space is not the same as backup capacity.

Add growth and headroom to the working set, then multiply by independent copies. Cloud synchronization can help access but is not automatically a versioned backup.

Round to a purchasable class

Capacity labels use decimal units.

Compare the result with available tiers while accounting for the operating system and built-in recovery space. A larger tier is a buffer, not a promise of future sufficiency.
