Open the breakdown before you delete anything

Both platforms show which categories hold the space.

The storage screen in Settings ranks categories and apps by size and is the only way to avoid deleting things that were never the problem. Give it a minute to finish calculating. Photos and video dominate on most phones; where they do not, one app holding cached media usually explains the rest.

02

Understand cache against data before clearing

They are different buttons with very different consequences.

Google describes clearing an app cache as deleting temporary data, while clearing storage permanently deletes the app data itself. Cache returns as you use the app and is safe to clear. Clearing storage can sign you out or discard downloads and local content, so read which one you are pressing.

03

Deal with photos and video as a library, not as files

Cloud backup lets you remove local copies safely.

Once photos are backed up, both platforms offer a way to remove the local copies while keeping them available from the cloud. Confirm the backup has actually completed for the range of dates you care about before removing anything. Recently deleted albums also hold space for a retention period, so emptying that album recovers it immediately.

04

Find the offline files you forgot about

Downloaded video, podcasts, maps, and games are the usual hidden bulk.

Streaming apps store episodes for offline use, map apps store regions, and games download asset packs that dwarf the app itself. These rarely appear where people look first. Android can also archive apps you seldom use, keeping personal data while removing the installed payload.

05

Reserve headroom rather than running at the edge

A phone with almost no free space behaves badly.

Updates need working room, cameras need space to write, and a full device can fail to install security patches. Aim to keep a visible margin free rather than clearing the minimum each time the warning appears. If the same category refills every month, the storage planner turns that growth into the capacity figure for the next phone.
