Battery health is current maximum capacity against design capacity.

A reading of 85% means a full charge now stores about 85% of the energy the battery held new. It is a capacity measure, not a defect alarm: every lithium-ion battery fades with use, and the health screen simply makes the fade visible.

Capacity is spent in charge cycles

One cycle is one full battery of energy, however it is split.

Charging from 50% to 100% twice is one cycle, not two. Manufacturers design phone batteries to retain a stated share of capacity for hundreds of complete cycles, so a two-year-old phone in the 80s is aging normally rather than failing.

Heat and full-charge time accelerate fade

Chemical aging depends on temperature and time spent at extremes.

Aged batteries can also mean managed performance

Very degraded batteries may throttle peaks to prevent shutdowns.

An old battery can struggle to deliver brief bursts of current, and phones may manage peak performance to avoid sudden power-offs. If a phone both drains fast and feels slower under load, the battery is one plausible shared cause worth checking before replacing the phone.

Replace on symptoms, not on a number alone

The decision is capacity, shutdowns, and cost against phone age.

A battery in the low 80s with no symptoms can serve for a long time; unexpected shutdowns or a battery that no longer covers the day are the practical triggers. Compare the manufacturer battery-service price against the phone’s remaining life before deciding either way.
