01

Start with what you actually print

Photos, color documents, and text-only pages favor different machines.

Inkjets produce better photographs and cover the widest paper range. Monochrome lasers produce sharp text quickly and are indifferent to weeks of idling. Color lasers sit in between: crisp office color, weaker photos, higher upfront cost.

02

Occasional printing punishes inkjets

Idle inkjets dry out; idle lasers do not.

A household that prints a few pages a month spends inkjet ink on cleaning cycles and clogged heads. Laser toner has no drying problem, which is why lasers are the usual recommendation for occasional use even when the machine costs more.

03

Cost per page beats printer price

The printer is the cheap part; consumables decide the real cost.

Divide cartridge price by its rated page yield for each candidate. Tank-style inkjets and high-yield toner both lower the per-page figure dramatically; a bargain printer with small cartridges can cost more within a year than a pricier one.

04

Count size, noise, heat, and energy

Lasers are larger, warm up, and draw more power while printing.

Lasers need warm-up time and space, and draw high power briefly; inkjets are compact and quiet. ENERGY STAR ratings identify models with low sleep-mode consumption, which matters more than print-time power for a home machine that idles most of the day.

05

Decide with a one-line rule

Match the machine to the printing pattern, then verify the consumables.

Frequent color and photos: inkjet, preferably a tank model. Mostly text, printed occasionally: monochrome laser. Office color without photos: color laser. Before buying, check the exact cartridge or toner price and yield, because that number is the decision.
