Printer Not Printing: Isolate the Failed Link

A panel test page separates the printer from everything upstream.

Use the printer’s menu to print a test or configuration page. If that fails, the problem is the printer: paper, consumables, a jam, or an error state. If it succeeds, the printer works and the failure is in the queue, driver, or connection.

A stuck job explains itself if you look at its status.

Open the queue and read the status of the first job: paused, error, or an endless “printing” state. Cancel only that job first; if the queue will not clear, restart the print spooler on Windows or reset the printing system on a Mac.

Two cheap substitutions tell you which layer failed.

Print a plain text document from a basic app. If it prints, the original app or file is the problem. If nothing prints from the computer but a phone can print through AirPrint or the manufacturer app, the computer’s driver or port is the failed link.

USB, Wi-Fi, and Wi-Fi Direct are three different paths.

A printer paired over Wi-Fi Direct is not on the home network, and a USB printer needs a data-capable cable and port. Check which path the computer’s printer entry actually uses before replacing anything.

Driver replacement fixes driver faults and nothing else.

Once the printer prints its own test page and the network path is proven, remove the printer entry and reinstall using the manufacturer’s current software or the operating system’s built-in driver. Keep the test-page result; it proves the hardware still works.
