Final grade math

The course grade is a weighted average

If the final is worth 40%, the rest of the course is worth 60%. The course grade is current average × 0.6 plus final score × 0.4.

Solve for the final score

Rearranging gives: needed = (target − current × (1 − w)) ÷ w. With an 88 average, a 40% final, and a 90 target, the final must score 93.

The syllabus defines the real scheme

Category weights, dropped scores, extra credit, and rounding policies change the arithmetic. A result above 100 means the target is unreachable through the final alone.

Boundary: the calculator solves the single-weight case. Multi-category schemes need each category average weighted separately, exactly as the syllabus describes.
