Split the symptom before touching anything
No hot water anywhere and hot water that runs out are different faults.
Run the tap farthest from the heater for two minutes and note whether it is cold, briefly warm, or hot then cold. Cold everywhere points to the heater receiving no energy or holding no heated water. Hot that fades points to tank capacity, recovery rate, or a valve mixing cold into the supply. One faucet alone is a fixture problem, not a heater problem.
Confirm the heater is receiving energy
This check is a look and a listen, not a repair.
For an electric unit, check whether its dedicated breaker has tripped and reset it once. For a gas unit, confirm the gas supply valve is open and read the status light or display against the label on the tank. Do not relight a pilot, adjust a gas control, or open a burner compartment unless the manufacturer instructions on the appliance direct you to and you can follow them exactly.
Understand what the reset button means
A high-limit switch trips because something made the water too hot.
Many electric heaters carry a red high-limit reset button behind an access panel. A single reset that holds can end the incident. A reset that trips again is evidence of a failing thermostat, element, or wiring fault, and repeated resetting hides a hazard rather than fixing one. Stop after the second trip and book service.
Match demand against tank size and recovery
Running out is often arithmetic, not a fault.
A tank delivers roughly its usable volume, then refills and reheats at its recovery rate. Back-to-back showers, a long soak, or a laundry cycle can outrun a small or aging tank, and the first-hour rating on the label describes that combined draw. Know which repairs belong with a licensed trade
Gas, sealed combustion, mains wiring, and the relief valve are professional work.
Call a licensed plumber or the manufacturer service line for gas components, burner or venting work, element and thermostat replacement, a leaking tank, or a temperature-and-pressure relief valve that weeps or discharges. Water pooling under a tank, a scorched connection, or a burning smell means shut off the energy supply at its disconnect and stop.
