Confirm dates, days, and meter status
A longer cycle or estimated read can change the total without a daily-use change.
Record the service dates, number of billing days, meter readings, and whether the read is actual or estimated. Compare kWh per day when billing periods differ, and keep seasonal weather in view.
Separate fixed, supply, and delivery components
Not every line scales with one more kilowatt-hour.
Group customer or meter charges, energy supply, transmission and delivery, riders, taxes, fees, credits, and prior balances. In competitive markets, supplier and distribution-utility charges may appear separately.
Check tiers, demand, and time-of-use periods
The price applied to the next kWh may differ from the bill-wide average.
Identify any usage blocks, seasonal rates, peak and off-peak periods, minimum charges, or demand charges. Use the applicable marginal charge for an appliance decision and the full billed total only when calculating an all-in household average.
Calculate two useful ratios and label them
A clearly named ratio prevents false precision.
Usage intensity is billed kWh divided by billing days. An all-in effective price is current electric-service charges divided by billed kWh, but fixed charges make that ratio rise when use falls. EIA state averages are broader benchmarks, not your utility tariff.
Read a bill without mistaking the balance for energy cost
Use the service-period detail before the large amount-due number.
Illustrative case, not a product test. These inputs are invented to make the reasoning reproducible. Replace them with your own observations; the result is not a typical household or product benchmark.

The amount due divided by 600 kWh is about $0.247/kWh, but it includes an old balance. Current service charges divided by usage are $0.18/kWh. The variable price for an extra kWh in this invented flat-rate plan is $0.16. These three numbers answer different questions.
To estimate one appliance, use the matching variable supply and delivery charges. To describe your whole bill, an effective price can be useful, provided you label the fixed costs it includes. Reducing usage by 100 kWh would save $16 in this example, not $18 or $24.70; the fixed fee and previous balance stay the same.
Transfer only the fields the calculation needs
You do not need to upload a bill to use this site.
- Find the start and end of the electricity service period and the billed number of days.
- Find electricity usage in kWh, not gas therms, meter serial numbers or a dollar balance.
- Separate current electricity charges from deposits, arrears, other utilities and late fees.
- Check whether the meter reading is actual, estimated or corrected.
- For time-of-use or tiered pricing, keep the separate energy amounts and matching prices. A single flat-rate input cannot reproduce the tariff exactly.
PG&E’s bill guide illustrates how a real provider separates billing dates and electric charges. Its labels and charges are provider-specific, not a universal U.S. tariff. Check your own utility’s current statement and rate sheet.
Use the two-bill comparison for a first screen. Copy only dates, days, kWh and relevant amounts into your private notes. Leave names, service addresses, account numbers and payment details out of screenshots or public questions.
