The short definition

Aperture controls the size of the lens opening. Shutter speed controls how long light is collected. ISO controls how the recorded signal is mapped to brightness. Changing any one by a stop doubles or halves its exposure contribution.

A useful exposure is a negotiated result: enough light for the file, enough shutter speed for the motion, enough depth of field for the subject, and no more ISO than the moment requires. The meter can suggest brightness; it cannot decide which compromise serves the photograph.

Aperture shapes space

Aperture changes light and depth of field.

A smaller f-number means a wider opening. Moving from f/4 to f/2.8 admits twice as much light, but it also narrows the range of distances that appear acceptably sharp. Depth of field also changes with focus distance, focal length, viewing size, and subject/background distance, so an f-number alone never guarantees a particular look.

Shutter speed shapes time

Shutter speed changes light and motion rendering.

Doubling the exposure time admits one stop more light. It also records twice as much movement. A fast shutter can freeze a wing or expression; a slow shutter can reveal water, traffic, or camera shake as a path through the frame.

ISO prices the signal

ISO changes brightness mapping and available headroom.

On a digital camera, raising ISO generally does not make the sensor collect more photons. It changes gain or the mapping used to produce the file, helping the camera deliver a usable brightness with less exposure. The practical cost can be more visible noise and less highlight headroom, depending on the sensor and processing.

Choose in consequence order

Decide motion and depth before optimizing ISO.

  1. Choose the shutter speed required by subject motion and camera stability.
  2. Choose the aperture required by depth of field and the lens.
  3. Raise ISO until the intended tones are recorded safely.
  4. Check highlight warnings and the actual focused area, not only the meter.
