What digital ISO actually does
ISO is not an opening that gathers more light.
Aperture and shutter time determine how much light reaches the sensor. Raising ISO changes the camera’s gain and/or the mapping used to create a brighter output. Camera designs differ, so the exact pipeline matters, but “higher ISO makes the sensor more sensitive” is not a complete physical explanation.
Noise is easiest to see when the signal is weak
Fewer captured photons make random variation more prominent.
A dark exposure lifted strongly in editing can reveal more noise than a higher-ISO frame that protected the same shutter and aperture, depending on the camera. The useful rule is not “always use the lowest ISO”; it is “collect as much light as the required motion and depth allow, while protecting highlights you need.”
Auto ISO is a constraint solver
Use it to defend a minimum shutter speed.
Set the mode and aperture/shutter decisions you care about, then set a maximum ISO and minimum shutter appropriate to the subject. The camera can react to changing light without silently dropping below the speed you need.
Judge noise at the final size
One-hundred-percent zoom is a diagnostic view, not the finished photograph.
Downsampling, printing, texture, and subject matter all change noise visibility. Compare files at equal brightness and equal output size. Check whether noise reduction erases detail or creates waxy surfaces before deciding that a cleaner file is automatically better.
A better field rule
Protect motion and highlight information, then accept the ISO that follows.
- Use the widest aperture consistent with the needed depth and lens behavior.
- Use the slowest shutter that still renders motion as intended.
- Raise ISO until important midtones are safely recorded.
- Check clipping and make a test frame.
