Questions people ask next.

Why is the checkout rate different from the state rate?

A rate can combine state, county, city, and special-district components, and some goods are exempt or treated differently. Confirm the rate for the location and product with the relevant authority.

Can I work backwards from a total?

Divide the total by one plus the rate as a decimal to recover the pre-tax price. A total of $108.25 at 8.25% divides back to $100.00.
